Café con Libros is much better than a simple café

Café con libros, Malaga

The truth is, there are so many different places to have coffee in any city anywhere in the world that you could get dizzy trying to figure out your favorite place. But, at the same time, its easy to tell someone the name of your preferred coffeehouse. Why is that? Isn´t the coffee from the place around the corner really similar to the coffee from Starbucks or the place next to where you work? Maybe they use the perfect combination of coffee and milk to create the most perfect latte of your life? The answer, of course, is no. What makes a coffee house the best, what makes it your favorite spot is the ambiance, the customer service and basically everything that makes you want to stay there resting for a minute from the frenetic pace that we have come to associate with our daily life.

El Boquerón Viajero has already written about a coffeehouse with a good ambiance in West Reading, Pennsylvania (Café Harmony) and another in East Windsor Connecticut (It’s a Grind Coffeehouse), but as of yet we haven´t shared with you the place we like best in Málaga: Café con Libros. Located in La Plaza de la Merced on the same street as the home where Pablo Picasso was born, we can find Café con Libros. You almost have to know what is inside because on the outside it looks like just another café with tables on the sidewalk and sun umbrellas. But once you go through the door and step onto the worn wooden floor, you will have entered a different world.

The first thing you will notice about the café is the fact that the furniture doesn´t match, actually it seems as if the owner´s friends have donated their old furniture in order to add a soft chair or a sofa, a few tables and even a wooden swing in the café. It isn´t necessary to stand in line in order to order your coffee like in Starbucks or someplace that is always in a hurry, but rather, they invite you to sit down wherever you like and take a look at the menu.

In Café con Libros you can order sándwiches, salads, desserts, or snacks but the coffee and tea menú is what always interests me. There is a big selection of special coffees with whipped cream, chocolate, liqors, and milk (depending on your taste and preferences, of course). It might seem strange that the coffee menu is in the form of a roll of paper towel and you have to turn it in order to read your options, but for me, it´s another detail that makes the place special.

Your coffee always comes with a caramel cookie that reminds me of my grandma´s house because she always had some sort of cookie like that when I visited. And don´t worry about hurrying out after finishing your coffee. You can stay there as long as you like chatting with your friend, reading a book or simply observing the world.
