Interview with Halcón Viajes - Our honeymoon in Tenerife

Conversations with us

El Boqueron Viajero en Tenerife
We recently returned from our honeymoon in Tenerife. Halcon Viajes took advantage of the occasion and wanted to interview us to find out more about our experience and our impressions of this marvelous island. Don´t miss out on a fun interview with the people from this well known travel agency!
Today on Halconviajes.com interviews we have the pleasure of talking with someone who always has great travel stories: El Boquerón Viajero, author of a travel blog, who contrary to what many of you might think, chose a destination that was not so far away, (but a great choice all the same) for their honeymoon. We´ll visit the island of Tenerife with them.
What has been your favorite trip that you´ve taken and why?
There have been a lot of special trips, actually each one has its unique points that make it special, but if you are making us choose, I think we would say the trip we took a little while back to Tenerife. It was our honeymoon and the island pleasantly surprised us with its natural diversity, landscape, unique corners and beautiful beaches. When we began our drive from our hotel in Puerto de la Cruz to the base of the Teide volcano, crossing through the clouds of the “panza burra” we realized that this was a very special place.
When, with whom, and how did you travel?
We took the trip during the last week in July, which is to say, not long ago. It was just the two of us (since it was the honeymoon for the two writers of El Boqueron Viajero and it that´s not the type of trip you take with your friends). And we flew out of Barajas in Madrid to the Aeropuerto Norte in Tenerife. Then we caught the “guagua” (bus) to the hotel so we could start to see the island and use public transportation.
Why did you choose this destination, what brought you there?
To be completely honest, we chose this destination because a friend of ours gave us a week in a hotel on the island for our wedding gift. He had been trying to persuade us to visit for a while, and with the excuse of the honeymoon, it seemed like the perfect place with its beaches, natural beauty and lots of room to relax. But of course, that´s the easy answer. We should also mention that a lot of people were expecting from a couple that likes to travel so much would choose a farther flung destination like New York, or the Caribbean, but we made the right decision. Since it is part of Spain, a lot of people don´t consider Tenerife to be an exotic destination, but we had some unforgettable and unique experiences going to the base of the Teide volcano, visiting the island, learning about the different foods, plants and traditions of Tenerife. We had planned to take a boat and visit another island, but in the end, we didn´t have to. We spent the whole week in Tenerife exploring the island in our rented car. Tenerife is, without a doubt, one of the natural paradises on the planet and you shouldn´t miss it!
What was the best experience of your trip, an anecdote that stands out or something new you learned?
I would say that the best experience we had was the drive we took through the Parque Rural de Anaga. It´s true that the road had a lot of curves and we had to stop a few times, but the moments where the trees from both sides of the road joined together to form a natural tunnel made it well worth our while. At other points, you could see above the clouds, as if they were big pieces of cotton. It was almost as if we had found a world out of a storybook and an enchanted forest. We arrived at El Pico del Inglés, where we saw the impressive clouds and the Teide in the background. It was a few hours drive and we ended up visiting the famous beach of Las Teresitas, but the car ride will stay with us as an impressive memory (in addition to being a paradise for those who love photography and amazing views).
Anecdotally, we can also mention our visit to Tanque, where we found a place we didn´t expect to ride a camel. We had never done it, and it was, without a doubt a classic moment for our honeymoon and a bit of fun.
Recommend for us a specific place, meal or the best moment at a place during the day on your trip.
There are several places that we enjoyed to eat or have a drink, but if I had to choose just one it would be Titos Bodeguita. It´s located in the upper part of Puerto de la Cruz and you can have dinner in the beautiful garden with gigantic flowers, and of course, the food was delicious. We liked it so much that we ate lunch there the first day and then we went back another day for dinner. The daily specials, not listed on the menu are impeccable and their goat cheese salad was phenomenal! Other dishes that we liked especially were the grilled cheese with “mojo picón”, the spinach croquettes, and the roast beef cut in very very thin slices as if it were serrano ham. This combined with the relaxed atmosphere and the little white lights they used at night made it stand out without a doubt. Other places that you shouldn´t miss on your visit (both in Puerto de la Cruz) are: Las Flores, a terrace with a gorgeous garden where you can have dinner or a cocktail/mojito and the Tasquita de Min on the port where they have some of the freshest seafood we tried (and someone from Málaga is telling you this). It´s making our mouths water just thinking about the dinner we enjoyed there!
Don´t leave the island without trying the many typical dishes like “mojo picón con papas arrugadas” (new potatoes with a spicy Canarian sauce), sama (a type of fish), las garbanzas (a stew made with chick peas), el gofio (a special kind of flour), las Viejas (another kind of fish), el rancho canario (another type of stew with noodles) and lots more that are sure to delight your palate.
