La Churreria New York – churros and hot chocolate

La Churreria New York has been a great discovery.  Now we can once again enjoy churros and hot chocolate!

La Churreria New York

In a city as big as New York, it’s easy to miss the flavors and treats that you are used to from home (or your adopted home, as the case may be.) While I enjoy a bagel with lox as much as anyone else, and don’t get me wrong….I LOVE a good cheeseburger, I also miss the small cafés in Spain tucked away on a side street filled with people standing at the bar dunking churros or magdalenas (muffins) in their café con leche. After five years living in Madrid as well as several summers spent in Seville, I don’t know that I’ll ever stop missing the everyday sounds of the coffee machine, clinking spoons and people chatting with animated voices and gestures in the bar.

That being said, there are few places in New York that have been able to replicate the Spanish bar that I’ve come to know and love, but we were lucky enough to find one in La Churreria New York, located on Mulberry Street in the neighborhood of Nolita. The owner, Lolo (a native of Valladolid) showed us around and rewarded us with the authentic flavors of Spain.

Everything about La Churreria New York feels like Spain. The narrow space and tiled walls reminded me of one of the many neighborhood bars in Madrid, and it’s high tables with their white marble surfaces and wrought iron bases could just as easily be found in Barrio Salamanca. The small local offers up sandwiches and snacks including a Calamari sandwich, the classic Sandwich Mixto (grilled ham and cheese), croquetas and, of course, Churros!

You can order churros (delicious sticks of fried dough) with the thick hot chocolate to dip them in by the person (6 dollars for one or 10 dollars for two) or by the number of churros you would like. They also serve churros filled with chocolate cream, dulce de leche or vanilla cream. We ordered churros sprinkled with sugar and curled into crispy narrow loops to dunk in the delicious chocolate. Lolo also insisted that we try some magdalenas (little muffins made with olive oil and sprinkled with sugar.) They were delicious and we took some home for breakfast the next morning.

La Churreria New York is a gem that is worth seeking out for a sweet treat or a quick bite when you are missing Spain, or if you want to enjoy the taste of churros in your own back yard. One of the great things about New York City is that if you look hard enough, you can always find a taste of home (or someone else’s home). We ruskommend La Churreria New York with 5 boquerones for it’s authentic style and flavors, as well as the friendly service.
