Pierre et Vacances Empuriabrava Marina, a home on the Venice of the Mediterranean

Pierre et Vacances Empuriabrava Marina was like having our own home on the Venice of the Mediterranean. They allow pets and had great views of the canal.

A lot of times when we travel, we look for the cheapest hotel that also meets our needs. Of course, there are times that we decide our “needs” include pampering ourselves a bit and paying extra for an extra comfortable bed or proximity to the city center. When it came to Pierre et  Vacances Empuriabrava Marina, the key was feeling at home away from home. We would be spending a week in Catalonia (more specifically in the province of Girona and the Costa Brava) exploring the small medieval towns, gorgeous landscapes and enjoying the delicious gastronomy, so most important to us was having a home base where our dog, Dino, was also welcome to stay.

The Pierre et Vacances Empuriabrava Marina is located in the small town on the Costa Brava that gives the apartments their name. It is at the edge of beach area and we had to drive past several of the town’s famous canals to get there. In fact, the canals give the town its nickname: “The Venice of the Mediterranean.” Once we arrived, however, we happily discovered that the beach was a quick 10 minute walk down the road; and some of the restaurants in town were only a bit farther away. We checked in and were given the key to our vacation apartment as well as a parking spot number.

The apartment had everything we needed for a home away from home. The kitchenette was fully equipped with a dishwasher, oven and stove top, microwave, and dishes. That was great because we could cook some of our meals from home and save a bit of money. The living room had a comfortable couch and television. The apartment also had a dining room table which we used as a work space during the day. The bedroom was a good size with stunning views of the canal. In fact, the whole apartment was very bright and when we opened the windows, we got a great sea breeze as we watched the boats maneuvering through the canals.

My favorite feature of the Pierre et Vacances Empuriabrava Marina was the fact that we were able to travel with our dog. I don’t mean the typical “we allow dogs” policy that many hotels claim to offer nowadays. What I mean is that if the dog is well trained and you are responsible, the dog can stay alone in the room if need be, so it really feels like home. Because we love to take Dino everywhere we can, but there are times (visiting museums, certain restaurants, supermarkets, etc) when he is better off sleeping alone happily in his bed.

This was one of the non-negotiable points when we were looking for a vacation apartment to be a home base for a few weeks. When we arrived Pierre et Vacances gave us a little trash bag holder with their logo. Depending on the time you spend in the apartments, they give you different gifts for your faithful companion including dog toys or doggie treats.

During our stay we enjoyed taking walks around the marina, as well as the quick access to the beach and the town of Empuriabrava. It was very easy to navigate and a perfect spot to visit the surrounding area. There is also easy access to the beach, so if you visit in the summer, it’s a perfect spot to stay and enjoy the water! In fact, you can rent a little boat (even if you don’t have a license) and take it for a little spin on the canals.

In terms of amenities, there is direct access to the canal, as well as a private pool that overlooks the canal. There is also a wellness center where you can completely relax and disconnect. There is basic wi-fi in all the rooms, as well. (You can also pay 5 euros more per day or 20 euros more per week for an upgraded connection should you need a faster connection). Over all, Pierre et Vacances Empuriabrava Marina is a great option if you want the comfort of a hotel combined with the convenience of your own apartment away from home. It is also close to soe of the beautiful towns in the Costa Brava and the interior of the province of Girona. We absolutely recommend it as a dog friendly place to stay in Catalunya.
