Gorgeous and magnetic, Route through the Boulevard of Cider, Food and Monutments
Our first stop in Oviedo was the Estadio Municipal Carlos Tartiere. The guards were really nice and let us enter the stadium where the Real Oviedo soccer team plays and they even let us walk on the grass to take a few photos. After that we continued our visit in the city center. We looked for a place to eat on the “Ruta de los Vinos” and found along the way the Church of San Juan el Real in the Plaza Fernando Rubio. The church is decorated on the outside with a lot of sculptures and it is rather impressive. In the end, we decided to eat at a place called the Sidrería El Valle.
After we ate, we needed to walk off the food a little bit, so we started going towards the Palacio de lasExposiciones y Congresos of Oviedo. To get there we passed by a life size statue of Woody Allen and a park that is in the center of Oviedo called the Campo de San Francisco. The Palacio de Congresos was impressive because of its modern architecture. It is made up of big white cylinders that join together at acute angles to make the big building that is now also home to a shopping center.
We continued our walk and we saw the Principe Felipe Auditorium where they give the prizes for the Principe de Asturias (famous in Spain) each year. Then we entered the old city where we saw the Plaza de la Constitución and the city hall. The streets in the old city were full of interesting buildings with balconies and it´s enjoyable to stroll through the area ignoring, of course, the large quantity of touristy shops.
We arrived at the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo and we took the obligatory photo with the statue of “La Regenta” with the Cathedral behind it. The cathedral is very typical and done in the gothic style. They started to build the outside in the 16th century and today it is known for the number of relics it has. After visiting the Cathedral, Rusko found himself in the Plaza de la Escandalera where Cajastur (a bank) had a big autograph book. Of course, Rusko had to sign as El Boquerón Viajero. We went past the TeatroCampoamor and the Academia de la LlinguaAsturiana before arriving at our last stop of the day on the Bulevar de la Sidra. There we had a bottle of cider shared between the four of us at a place called El Cachopito de gascona and enjoyed the atmosphere of the street.
The next day would be the last day of our route and we started to get the feeling that the good times were ending. (Although, obviously, Rusko always tries to enjoy himself until the last minute). We ruskommend Oviedo with 4 boquerones and we wish come back soon.
