If you’ve ever tried to park your car in the center of Madrid, you know just how excited we were to find a parking spot around the corner from the Eric Vökel Madrid Suites in the heart of Malasaña on calle San Bernardo. What was even better is that we were staying on a Sunday and Monday night (and Monday was a holiday) so it was FREE parking! Talk about getting off to a good start!

We had heard a lot about the boutique apartments Eric Vökel has in Madrid, Amsterdam and Barcelona, so we were anxious to try them out for ourselves and see if it lived up to the amazing photos we’d seen online. We were buzzed into the building by reception and the check in process was completely automated. In fact, it reminded us of the check in at CitizenM hotels in New York with a sleek and modern feel, despite the historic exterior of the building. Once we had our keys, we took the elevator up to the fifth floor (the highest in the Madrid Suites) and opened the door to our apartment home for the next two nights.

The first thing we did was head out to the terrace to see the view of Madrid’s rooftops in the evening light. That was the moment I fell in love with the place. Not only was it perfectly positioned between Malasaña and Argüelles (for those of you who don’t know Madrid, this is right in the middle of the action without the craziness of the Puerta del Sol), but it had a huge terrace with views of the tiled rooftops and the fading light of a sunny Sunday. They say “from Madrid straight to Heaven,” and the view certainly captured that to a tee.

Once we had marveled at the view, we headed inside to check out the spacious living and dining area complete with a dishwasher and all the plates and silverware you might need. The bedrooms both had an ensuite bathroom and there was space for three people to stay comfortably and have some privacy. We also loved the fact that there was a towel warmer in the bathroom and there was lots of closet space for storing our things. These are the comforts you expect at a hotel, but not necessarily at a vacation apartment.

One of the drawbacks to staying in an apartment rather than a hotel can sometimes be the fact that it’s “someone else’s home.” In this case, the boutique apartments are like a hotel with the amenities and comforts of your own home. In the morning from 9-11am they have a breakfast service where you take a basket filled with a buttery croissant, orange juice, and milk along with your coffee, tea or hot chocolate up to the room to enjoy. We had ours on the terrace and it was the perfect way to start the day.

The Eric Vökel Madrid Suites also have a rooftop area to lounge and enjoy the sun in the summer months. On the basement level there are lockers to store your luggage if need be. In our opinion, the best part of the Madrid Suites was the fact that we truly felt like we had a home base away from home. It was comfortable enough to get a bit of work done, and then relax with a drink on the terrace. It was easy to meet with friends in Malasaña and Sol, and we were honestly tempted to ask how much it would cost to rent the flat. (I wouldn’t mind the daily breakfast service, either! Haha! )

If you are looking for an apartment experience that has the feel of a high end boutique hotel, we recommend the Eric Vökel Madrid Suites as a fantastic option in the heart of Malasaña. With spacious rooms, great service and an historic building, there is little more that you could want from a place to stay in Madrid. We ruskommend the Madrid Suites with 5 boquerones for it’s location, attention to detail and convenience.
